When Parkinson’s UK, an organisation at the heart of support, hope, and change for those affected by Parkinson’s, set out to create a new workplace, they weren’t simply looking for desks and meeting rooms. They had a bigger vision of a bold, inclusive, and human-centred environment that could truly reflect their mission. A space that didn’t just function, but one that cared.
They needed a workplace that would embrace everyone, especially people living with Parkinson’s and create a sense of community, purpose, and belonging. We were honoured to be entrusted with this mission to craft an inclusive, future-ready workplace at 50 Broadway that would reflect the soul of the organisation whilst breaking down barriers through thoughtful and inclusive design.
Our journey with Parkinson’s UK began not with blueprints, but with listening. Through months of immersive research, our Strategy Team worked to understand the lived experiences of those with Parkinson’s. We explored the nuances of symptoms like mobility limitations, fatigue, and freezing episodes and asked: How can workplaces be designed to respond with empathy and belonging.
This wasn't just about designing an office. It was about building a space that could hold events, foster collaboration, and deliver support, all under one roof. It’s a space that brings people together, eliminating the need to outsource events or services, and instead invites the community to “come in”. It’s inclusive by design, and powerful by purpose.
Accessibility was at the heart of the design. Across 12,000 sq ft, every inch was thoughtfully considered to ensure dignity, independence, and comfort for all. On the 3rd floor, wide corridors allow seamless movement for those with mobility challenges. Furniture was handpicked for functionality and ease including chairs with supportive arms, armless sofas for wheelchair users, and tea points designed for all abilities, with accessible counters and intuitive layouts.
One particularly moving feature is the embedded guiding lines in the corridor carpets, designed to help those experiencing freezing episodes to continue moving with confidence. It’s a small detail that speaks volumes about what true accessibility looks like. Other features include the creation of zoning areas for different ways of work, double screens and quiet areas which support neuro diversity, and ensuring that every door and room is wheelchair accessible. There is also a drop in zone for hybrid and virtual calls that connect office based workers with those working remotely.
Throughout the office, visual storytelling evokes understanding, empathy, and pride. Striking 3D brain model installations offer insight and clarity into the neurological realities of Parkinson’s. Vibrant signage and wayfinding, crafted in Parkinson’s UK’s signature colours, support both navigation and identity, anchoring people to the values and mission that drive the organisation forward.
As a values-driven charity, sustainability was a pillar for Parkinson’s UK’s new office. Furniture was reused and reupholstered, breathing new life into existing pieces whilst dramatically reducing waste and capital expenditure. Every new element was chosen with care, for function, beauty, and environmental impact.
The “Snug" area which utilises a repurposed sofa now feels like a cornerstone of warmth and welcome. Light wood flooring throughout The Tulip Suite (their staff and community space) brings clarity and calm, reducing visual noise for those with Parkinson’s and contributing to a serene, focused environment. Every detail was a step towards a greener, more responsible future.
Parkinson’s new workplace is a beacon of what can be achieved when design meets purpose. It stands as a physical embodiment of Parkinson’s UK’s mission to make life better for those affected by Parkinson’s, now and into the future.
Employees, volunteers, visitors, and people living with Parkinson’s all have a place here. They share a space to connect, collaborate, and feel genuinely welcomed. The impact of this project will be felt far beyond its walls, serving as a powerful reminder that thoughtful design can transform lives.
