The ArcelorMittal Orbit sculpture, which is permanent lasting legacy of London's hosting of the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, was designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond, and primarily funded by steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, Chairman of the ArcelorMittal steel company.
The option to abseil down the 376 feet tall sculpture and observation tower, was only introduced in 2014, but quickly became extremely popular thanks to its high abseil platform with stunning views across the Olympic Park and much of London. The structure is set to adapted again by Spring 2016 to incorporate the world's tallest and longest tunnel slide which will be 178m in length and 76m in height.
Benjamin Murray, Charity Chair and Head of Marketing at Peldon Rose says: "When we asked our staff which charity they wanted to support in 2015, Alzheimer's Society was a clear favourite as it has touched the hearts of several colleagues in the business. When we started discussing sponsor-worthy challenges, the abseil down the Orbit was the one which both scared and excited us in equal measure".
"Although we've now helped raise over £32,000 following this abseil, what we feel is equally as valuable is helping Alzheimer's Society raise awareness of dementia. In addition to taking part in Dementia Awareness Week where we held placards and distributed leaflets outside Wimbledon Station, we have also written blogs advising people how to make the home and workplace a more dementia-friendly place to be. No-one should ever feel frightened or alone because of dementia, and we're proud to have supported Alzheimer's Society this year".
Seema Chopra, Senior Regional Corporate Partnerships Executive at Alzheimer's Society says: "We are extremely grateful to Peldon Rose for organising this fundraising event at ArcelorMittal Orbit. It was also great that they invited along our other corporate supporters to join them to help boost funds to such a magnificent total”.
The fantastic fundraising total for the abseil was only possible thanks to the very generous donations we received. We would particularly like to thank our partner companies, including Twisted Pair, Elite Supplies, Third Sector Property, IDD and InterSign, who gave so generously and many of whom joined us on the day, bringing so much energy and fun.
We’re not finished fundraising yet though, and will be joining fellow Alzheimer's Society corporate supporter Moore Stephens on a 'Fire Walk' across hot coals in November.
There’s still time if you would like to donate to our abseil total. Please visit https://www.justgiving.com/peldonrose-abseil/
