Preview: Clerkenwell Design Week 2018

18 May 2018. News.

Now in it’s ninth year, Clerkenwell Design Week 2018 takes place on 22-24 May from 10am until 9pm. The UK’s leading independent design festival annually attracts over 30,000 people from the international design community including, of course, our rather talented design and furniture consultants. These are the must know facts and the highlights you can explore this year.

Clerkenwell Design Week exhibitions

There are seven different exhibition venues across the Clerkenwell’s two-and-a-half square miles, with over 300 exhibiting brands covering everything from furniture to lighting, textiles to accessories, and surface to product design.

‘Design Fields’, located at Spa Fields will showcase leading furniture, lighting and product design from around the world. For the more discerning clients we recommend visiting Hayche which creates original and meaningful pieces which are carefully curated and beautifully crafted. We love their style and range of vibrant colours which are perfect for creating the atmosphere and culture.

Riding the current wave of British fever, you’ll find the ‘British Collection’ venue located in the barrel roofed Crypt on Clerkenwell Green, of St James’s Church which will showcase some striking British talent. We’ve long been a fan on benching solutions in collaboration areas, so make sure you visit James Burleigh. Making a comeback at Clerkenwell Design Week, The John and Sylvia S-Range, is being re-issued by Nathan Furniture, and will feature 13 pieces from the original classic collection created for Stag in the 1960s.

New for 2018, ‘Light’ will take over Fabric nightclub on Charterhouse Street. Plenty of innovations and bright ideas will be on show including Wever & Ducre Lighting from Belgium whose lighting systems exude style and passion. Alongside the exhibitions are a series of events taking place in the 90-plus showrooms and studios that line the streets as well as special installations across Clerkenwell.

Clerkenwell Design Week showrooms

You’re spoilt for choice with showrooms to visit this year and we’re delighted to see so many talented businesses we already work with opening their doors again this year. There are some great talks taking place this year and three have caught our eye.

Orangebox this year feature Planet v Product which explores how being environmentally considerate is shaping design thinking (Tue 11:30am / Wed 12:30pm / Thr 3:30pm), and also author Gerry Taylor discusses his latest book ‘That’s not a stick, that’s a log’ which examines emerging cultural trends within the workplace (Tue 3:30pm / Wed 4:30pm / Thr 11:30am).

Over at Interface are environmentally conscious talks on ‘Marine plastics – what part should the supply chain play?’ (Tue 6pm) and also ‘Trash to treasure – How can we turn waste into items of beauty?’ (Wed 6pm). There is also a presentation from designer Oliver Heath on WELL Building who explores the shift to a more human centred design approach.

And finally, our client MOO has partnered with PATTERNITY to discuss the power of creative collaboration for a sustainable and innovative world (Tue 11am). A £5 charity donation is being charged and all guests will receive a pack of limited edition postcards designed by PATTERNITY and MOO. Tickets can be bought here.
